How to calculate fuel needed and trip cost
Use the complete one-way or round-trip distance, keep the efficiency and price units matched, calculate the fuel volume, then multiply by the price for that same volume unit.
Metric formula
Fuel needed (L) = distance (km) × consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100. Trip cost = litres needed × price per litre.
Example: 500 km at 7.2 L/100 km
500 × 7.2 ÷ 100 = 36 L. At 1.65 per litre, 36 × 1.65 = 59.40 total fuel cost.
US or UK MPG formula
Gallons needed = distance in miles ÷ MPG. Multiply by the price per matching US or UK gallon; those gallon standards are different.
For a round trip, double the full distance once. This is a fuel-budget estimate, not route planning, safe-range advice, or a guarantee of real consumption.
